Do it differently! Women designers at the Augarten Porcelain Manufactory

"Do it differently!" was the advice given by the architect Oswald Haerdtl in his capacity as professor at the University of Applied Arts in 1955 to his former student Ursula Klasmann, encouraging her to find her own individual style in designing modern tableware for the Augarten Porcelain Manufactory. To mark the firm’s centenary, we are focusing on the female design pioneers of Viennese porcelain.

From the founding years of the porcelain manufactory in the Augarten, women were active not only in the making of whiteware and as porcelain painters but also in the role of designers, creating new forms and decors. They all underwent professional artistic training and were active at the Wiener Werkstätte or in their own studios.

The featured artists range from Ena Rottenberg, Mathilde Jaksch and Hilde Jesser in the 1920s, via Elfriede Teufelhart, Grete Rader-Soulek and Ursula Klasmann in the 1950s, to the present day with Hanna Burkart, Xenia Ostrovskaya and LUCY.D.
